Nuclear Free Europe

GM & D CND is opposed to the Nuclear Weapons Policy of NATO and the UK.

Despite the unequivocal commitment to achieve nuclear disarmament under the 2000 UN NPT Review Conference,
no steps to disarmament were taken at the 2005 Review Conference.

The UK has been obliged to integrate its Trident fleet, which carries 1000 times the killing power of the Hiroshima bomb, into NATO. NATO also keeps US nuclear weapons at Lakenheath, a US military base in Suffolk. Nuclear warheads are routinely flown backwards and forwards to the US, putting British people at grave risk.
It is disturbing that the UK policy on nuclear weapons is governed by NATO's policies. NATO still holds a policy of retaining nuclear weapons and is prepared to use nuclear weapons first.
Nuclear weapons and the threat of their use are no protection against violent attacks. Their very retention is de-stabilising, a provocation to proliferation by other nation states.

In March 2005, Greater Manchester and District CND hosted a conference titled 'A Europe for Peace'. Jointly organised by Mouvement de la Paix (France), it provided a platform for a whole range of speakers and 150 participants from across Europe to discuss our opposition to the increasing militarisation of Europe.
